By signing on November 28, 2001 in Sarajevo the attached Letter of Intent, the four riparian countries of the Sava Basin have committed themselves :

to define and establish by summer 2002 the proper institutional framework ( Treaty) based on the models set up for other international rivers which, once ratified by the signatory country (fall 2002), will establish the International Sava Basin Commission;

to devise and start up the implementation by fall 2002 of first International Sava Basin Commission Short and Medium Term Master Plan aiming to:

rehabilitate and develop the navigation of Sava basin and its main tributaries Drina and Una,
-
secure the sustainable development, utilization, preservation and management of Sava Basin water and related resources,
-
preserve and protect the environment, biodiversity and aquatic condition of Sava Basin,
-
promote the social and economic welfare of Sava basin riparian State and Communities and the well-being of all Sava basin riparian people.
